BITE5 battery tester
Test multiple battery types
The BITE5 will test lead-acid (VLA and VRLA) batteries, NiCD batteries, and lithium-ion batteries.
Supports battery discharge testing
While performing a discharge test with the Torkel, the BITE5 will measure the individual cell voltage, impedance and temperature throughout the test. Not only will this help to identify weaker cells in the string, but this will allow you to determine unique impedance baseline values for the string under test.
Touch screen setup and data trending
The touch screen on the BITE5 allows you to review data immediately, evaluating individual cells or trending string data and cell performance throughout their life spans. Get your answers on the spot, make any required repairs, and retest to verify the repair - all in a single trip to the site without the need for transferring or printing data.
Measures impedance on cells up to 200 V
New battery chemistries and applications are creating batteries that operate at higher voltages in excess of 100 Vdc. The BITE5 will measure and record cell voltages up to 200 Vdc along with battery impedance and battery temperature.
Measure AC and DC voltage
Measure DC voltages up to 1000 V and AC voltages up to 600 V, enabling testing of solar combiner boxes and inverters.
About the product
The BITE5 battery tester enables you to perform a simple, quick test, for evaluating the state of health (SOH) of lead-acid (VLA and VRLA), NiCD, and lithium-ion batteries. Featuring an easy-to-use touch screen interface, the BITE5 supports both impedance testing and, when used in conjunction with a load bank, discharge testing. Tests can be performed on individual cells or on strings, up to a maximum cell voltage of 200 V.
Measurement options provided by the BITE5 battery tester include cell impedance, cell voltage, ripple voltage, AC ripple current and DC float current. For impedance tests, users can set pass, warning, and fail limits for impedance and voltage. For discharge tests, measurements are recorded throughout the full discharge period. Trends can be displayed on the instrument’s integrated touch screen and the stored results can be downloaded via a USB cable or via an SD card for detailed analysis and archiving. Wireless transfer of data to Megger’s PowerDB measurement software suite is also supported.
Among the additional features provided by the BITE5 battery tester are provision for measuring DC voltages up to 1000 V and AC voltages up to 600 V. This means that it is ideal for making measurements on solar combiner boxes, and for checking the input and output voltages of inverters used in renewable power systems.

Interpreting test results
The following table offers general guidelines to evaluate impedance and strap resistance measurements. A comparison to the average string results is a recommended analytic approach. As subsequent tests on a battery system yield additional data, trending becomes possible, which gives you the ability to determine whether a problem is imminent or further out. Over time, it is expected that you will establish your own percentage deviation warning and alarm values. It is strongly recommended that you use the software provided with your equipment to keep all the historical data for each of the strings under test. The software includes several charts - including warning and alarm criteria - that will facilitate the trending and analysis of the data.
Percent variation from string average | Percent variation from string average | Percent deviation from baseline | Percent deviation from baseline | |
